Richard Thompson and Emitt Rhodes

Monday was one of the greatest musical days of my life.  I spent the day in the studio watching and listening while Richard Thompson tracked guitars to 3 of Emitt's new songs.  I have been a hardcore fan of Richard since the early 80's when I discovered Fairport Convention and his solo records and I've always considered him one of the greatest musicians on earth but on Monday, he proved to be about 10 times better than that.  Emitt's new songs, (and his old ones for that matter) are not easy music.  HIs chords and melodies are quite complex.   We had charts ready for Richard to read but he pretty much refused to use them and instead just played off Emitt using his ears.  He did a few passes for each song and I'd say 95% of EVERYTHING he played was perfect - and each take was totally different from the previous!  He plays more like John Coltrane than a normal guitar player.  It was unbelievable.  Emitt just kept shaking Richard's hand throughout the day and thanking him for being there.   Photo
